Coinbase agreed in December 2025 to buy The Clearing Company, a prediction markets startup, days after it began rolling out prediction markets to US users.

Coinbase announced on December 22, 2025 that it had agreed to acquire The Clearing Company, a startup focused on regulated, on-chain prediction markets.

Prediction markets on Coinbase

The week before, Coinbase had begun rolling out prediction markets to users. These let people trade on the outcomes of real-world events, such as elections, economic data, sports and culture, in the same app where they trade crypto, derivatives and stocks. Coinbase offers the contracts through Coinbase Financial Markets, a CFTC-registered firm and NFA member.

Why buy The Clearing Company

The Clearing Company's team is made up of prediction market specialists led by founder Toni Gemayel. Coinbase said the team would help it scale prediction markets as part of its "Everything Exchange" plan, which aims to put every asset class in one place.

The deal was subject to customary closing conditions and was expected to close in January 2026.

Things to know

Prediction market contracts can expire worthless if the event goes the other way, and availability depends on where a user lives. Coinbase's prediction markets launched first in the United States.
